Questions to Ask Yourself about Compliance:

If a person speaking another language came to our office right now, what would we do to accommodate that person’s needs?

Would they have to wait longer?

Would they be sent away to come back with someone to interpret for them?

Would you use their child an interpreter for them?

Would you expect them to pay for an interpreter?

Would they become frustrated and leave without receiving any assistance?

Would patient education materials be available in their language?

Would they understand the prescription or any written materials given to them?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, this patient can file a complaint with Health and Human Services against you and your organization. Even if they do not file a complaint, they have been discriminated against based on their national origin.
